Overstruck on a civic issue from Apameia
Lot 674
KINGS OF ARMENIA. Artavasdes II, 56-34 BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 23 mm, 8.66 g, 11 h), Artaxata, 35/4 (?). Draped bust of Artavasdes II to right, wearing five-pointed tiara decorated with star and eagles and tied with diadem; behind to left, [A]. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩN / [APTAYAΣΔOY] Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand. Kovacs 167. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, fine.

From an important collection of Armenian coins.

This coin was overstruck on an earlier issue of Apameia in Syria (HGC 9, 1419): the head of Zeus is still visible on the obverse whereas the reverse shows an elephant standing tothe right and parts of the legend (AΠ[AMEΩN] / TH[Σ IEΡAΣ] - KAI A[ΣΥΛOΥ] / Σ[...]). Unfortunately, the date is not fully readable, but it is likely ΣE = SE 237 = 76/5 BC.
